Caring for the A'ina (Land) is an important part of cultivating crops on campus in Hawai'i. Whether it's foraging for local ʻŌhelo berries to make a tart or harvesting pāwale (Hawai'ian buckwheat) to feed the chickens, our students will learn about sustainably utilizing the gifts from the A'ina.
We have several teaching gardens each with different styles of planting
in-ground traditional garden beds
raised garden beds
vertical hydroponic systems
recycled refrigerators raised gardens
permaculture and hugekultur projects
microgreen mason jardens
At Lava Land, we don't just employ one method or style of food growing, we utilize timeless garden traditions and experiment with new approaches giving students a wide range of experiences and techniques to help open their eyes to the possibilities.
Our students will grow most of the fresh produce for their meals, with over 55 different crops (and expanding), and a 12-month growing season, there's always something ready to be planted or harvested. More info on our courses can be found on our curriculum page.
