Whether its going on adventures with a loveable farm dog, or snuggling baby kittens we foster for a local rescue, you'll have plenty of family pets to help you enjoy your time at Lava Land. While pets are certainly a big part of life around here, and learning proper care and nutrition for them is a part of the curriculum, we have many other farm animals students will care for.
Everyone loves to hold baby bunnies, but cleaning out the cages isn't as popular. When it comes to raising animals, students will learn every aspect of routine to medical care to ensure our animals have a comfortable, healthy environment. Our campus farm prioritizes biodiversity and utilizes animal agriculture as an integral part of natural farming practices. That's a fancy way of saying, we harvest poop to fertilize a wide variety of crops. Students aren't just handed a shovel and put to work, the curriculums helps them to understand the important biological process and best practices for safely utilizing animal waste.
At a time when bird flu is all the talk, we understand the importance of teaching strict biosecurity measures to protect ourselves, our students and our flocks. Our animal husbandry classes cover many aspects of raising poultry for eggs and food- chickens, ducks, and turkeys.
As a farm that produces animals for consumption, our homesteading domestics class will cover all aspects of farm to table animal processing. There is a list of our complete animal related course on our curriculum list.
We've had a few different rescues over the years, including Black Betty a potbelly pig we rescued who's moved on to greener pastures, literally. We got her a boyfriend and a pasture down South Point.
A current guest on the farm is an Chinchilla, an exotic and endangered species. His name is...wait for it. Little Man Jarvis Fuzzy Bob. He loves dust baths and walks on a leash.
